Address the application of colour as an informational and a semantic element is a challenge both in Design and Architecture courses. Planning disciplines that deal with teaching of colour as a significant element of language is quite complex, dealing with many variables, both objective and subjective, among which the creativity and subjectivity of the future professional.
This article presents a method of teaching – developed and improved over the last eight years – applied to the discipline “Theory and Practice of Colour”, which belongs to a bachelor’s course in Graphic Design, Architecture and Interior Design in São Paulo (Brazil). The method at first challenges the student to come into contact with their own colors and to understand their subjectivity and then to put themselves as agents of the application of colors in their projects, their meanings and to understand their relationship of the design’s concept and the support, exploring the musicality that results when colors are applied to the textures. This process proved to be efficient both in practical and theoretical terms, considering the activities’ results and the improvement on the students’ ability to research, make synthesis and syntactic analysis, understand and assign meanings.
Regarding creativity issues, the student gets more confident when it comes to chromatic choices, formats, media and their interrelationships in the project as a whole, increasing their repertoire and ability to justify the project’s decisions. This paper presents the discipline’s theoretical bases and the program’s method used in theoretical and practical lessons, as well as its interdisciplinary approach considering studio-based learning in design. For the purposes of illustration, students’ works are also shown.
